Dwayne Dopsie

Accordionist

About:

Dwayne Dopsie is a Louisiana zydeco accordionist, bandleader, and cultural torchbearer whose work anchors modern zydeco in its Creole roots while driving it forward on national and international stages. The son of Rockin’ Dopsie, a defining figure of the genre, Dopsie grew up inside the tradition and stepped into professional performance early, developing a command of diatonic accordion, vocals, and band leadership rooted in dance culture and community.

Fronting Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers, he leads a high-energy ensemble built for live performance. The band’s sound blends classic zydeco forms with rhythm and blues, Southern funk, and extended grooves designed for participatory crowds. Festivals, clubs, and cultural events remain the core of the project, where call-and-response vocals, driving backbeats, and tight arrangements define the experience.

Dopsie’s career reflects sustained recognition across Louisiana music institutions and national media. His work has earned the 2022 Big Easy Award for Best Zydeco Band, more than 20 OffBeat Awards across Best Accordionist, Best Zydeco Artist, and Best Zydeco Band categories, and placement at #29 on “100 Reasons Why People Come Back to Louisiana” in 2024. In 2024, he performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on the same bill as The Rolling Stones. He is associated with the 2022 Grammy Award–winning documentary Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story.

Beyond the stage, Dopsie has appeared across major television and media platforms, reinforcing his role as a visible ambassador for Louisiana culture. His presence spans national morning shows, cable networks, international outlets, and major print publications, with feature stories and cover appearances tied to festivals, Mardi Gras, and regional music heritage.

Today, Dopsie continues to tour with the Zydeco Hellraisers while building durable infrastructure around his catalog, touring, and media presence. His work centers on live performance as the primary engine, supported by disciplined operations and clear brand positioning that serve long-term sustainability.
