Conrad Johnson Orchestra
Big Blue Sound
About:
The Conrad Johnson Orchestra is a powerhouse ensemble dedicated to preserving the vibrant, soul-infused legacy of Houston’s big band jazz scene. Founded in the 1960s by legendary educator and bandleader Conrad “Prof” Johnson, the Orchestra continues to deliver the signature “Big Blue Sound”—a dynamic fusion of Texas blues and sophisticated jazz arrangements that defined a generation of Gulf Coast music.
For over 50 years, this 20+ piece professional ensemble has carried forward Prof’s original compositions, featuring a repertoire of more than 50 of his original charts and arrangements. Their catalog also includes six works from the Duke Ellington Sacred Series, regularly performed in churches throughout Houston. The group’s unmistakable style—a deep, swinging blend of brass-driven funk, blues roots, and jazz sophistication—continues to be a defining influence in the region and beyond.
Under Prof’s leadership, the ensemble emerged during a pivotal moment in Houston’s musical history. Prof was best known as the director of the Kashmere High School Stage Band, which gained national acclaim in the 1970s and was the subject of the award-winning documentary THUNDER SOUL, presented by Jamie Foxx. The film captured the reunion of his former students as they paid tribute to their 92-year-old mentor in a concert, showcasing the transformative impact of his mentorship and music.
Today, the Orchestra is led by Music Director James Williams, Jr., an accomplished trumpeter and educator with over four decades of experience. Williams has performed with legends such as The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Nancy Wilson, Aretha Franklin, and Sammy Davis, Jr., bringing unmatched expertise and passion to his role. He continues to expand the Orchestra’s reach while honoring Prof’s mission: to elevate Black American music, nurture young talent, and inspire audiences with timeless sound and performance excellence.
